NEXT New York 2023: Debuting a New Vision for Industry Innovation
Medidata NEXT New York 2023 was an unforgettable experience that brought together 800 life sciences leaders to learn, network, and explore! NEXT featured 40+ sessions across 2 days of can’t-miss content—including keynotes, roundtables, panels, and more.
Check out some of the key takeaways from the industry’s premier event.
Welcoming a New Paradigm for Clinical Research
Leaders from Catalyst, Fortrea, Orion, and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center took the main stage with Medidata experts to unveil a new vision for clinical innovation. Our speakers discussed the pain points affecting clinical research—from transactional views of patients, to the lack of patient diversity, to disparate systems and data silos.
Together with our partners, we’re creating new experiences across our industry—ones that deliver innovative strategies for trial acceleration that build long-lasting partnerships with patients, harness AI-powered insights, and prioritize healthcare data interoperability. Our speakers presented this new paradigm and debuted new developments to enable tomorrow’s breakthroughs.
“What we're doing in clinical trials these days is tapping more into a patient's full life experience of data…and bridging the gap between the real-life experience data that they have, and the tiny fraction that we actually access today in clinical trials.”
– Anthony Costello, CEO of Patient Cloud, Medidata
Dr. Ken Jeong’s Story of Humor, Humility, and Hope
We were thrilled to have renowned actor, comedian, and producer, Dr. Ken Jeong, join us for a fireside chat and audience Q&A. Ken’s humor and humility were on display as he discussed his journey from medicine to comedy—starting with his early career as a physician and leading to his most famous acting roles. Ken emphasized the importance of his experiences in medicine and clinical research and how they helped shape his career.
Ken then spoke about his role as a caregiver to his wife, Tran, during her treatment for triple-negative breast cancer, as well as his subsequent advocacy for Stand Up for Cancer. His story was one of inspiration and hope in the face of adversity.
How to Power Partnerships with Sponsors and Sites
Representatives from Merck Research Laboratories, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, South Broward Research, and the Society for Clinical Research Sites came together to explore the connection between sites and sponsors. As clinical trials evolve, so too does the partnership between these stakeholders. But like any relationship, success depends on open communication and trust.
The discussion focused on three main areas where sites need help: stronger and more robust budgets, integrated and consistent technology, and more effective patient technical support. The panelists explored how addressing these challenges can build positive relationships and free up sites to spend more time with patients.
Transforming Healthcare: Lessons Learned with Dr. Patrice Harris
We were honored to be joined by Dr. Patrice Harris—the first female African American president of the American Medical Association (AMA)—as part of our featured keynote on Day 2. Dr. Harris discussed her inspiring journey to become a physician, AMA president, and founder of the digital healthcare company, eMed.
Dr. Harris stressed the importance of giving a voice to communities who don’t have one, and to ensure their concerns and issues are appropriately raised. It takes intentional, proactive planning, as well as listening to communities’ needs and developing relationships past a single clinical study; doing so can sustain long-term engagement and build trust. Dr. Harris also called on the industry to continuously question the status quo and to fuel multi-sector collaborations by breaking down silos.
