Shaping Tomorrow’s Trials: Takeaways from Medidata NEXT New York 2024
As the clinical trial landscape evolves, so do the demands for more integrated, data-driven, and patient-centered solutions. There’s a pressing need for a more holistic approach to clinical trials—one that engages patients longitudinally—before and after their participation in clinical research—and connects and manages all data sources throughout the clinical research spectrum.
NEXT New York 2024 focused on the industry’s quest to build this new vision for clinical studies—and what it means for all stakeholders involved. Check out the highlights below and read on to get the latest from NEXT.
Powering a New Vision for Industry Innovation
Over 1,500 life sciences leaders joined us for NEXT New York, including speakers from AbbVie, Stryker, Karyopharm, Merck, Parexel, IQVIA, AstraZeneca, Syneos Health, and more.
Together we explored the next steps of Medidata’s paradigm shift in how we approach clinical research. The mission? To accelerate trials, treat patients and sites as partners, and harness AI-powered insights.
We debuted a transition from point solutions to three value-driven experiences:
The Patient Experience: Fostering stronger connections between patients, sites, and researchers.
The Data Experience: Leveraging comprehensive data management to enhance trial outcomes.
The Study Experience: Elevating clinical trial design and execution.
Our customers, patient advocates, and research sites have been critical in shaping these experiences. Initiatives like the Medidata Customer Advisory Board (which has completed meetings with 55+ organizations across 3 continents), Patients Insights Board (which includes a team of patient advocates across numerous disease states), and Site Tech Board (which features a panel of experienced site representatives) have given clinical trial stakeholders a voice to infuse their perspectives and feedback to help improve future offerings.
“Experiences mean the view of the patient beyond the bounds of a clinical trial. It means capturing data in a trial outside of visits using sensors, diaries, and more. And being able to interact with that patient even when the trial is done.”
– Anthony Costello, CEO, Medidata, a Dassault Systèmes Company
Building Partnerships that Drive Digital Health Innovation
Creating better patient and site-centric solutions requires an all-hands approach. Medidata announced four strategic partnerships at NEXT New York—each geared toward addressing industry pain points.
Cogstate: Medidata and Cogstate have joined forces on a unified, integrated eCOA solution tailored to central nervous system (CNS) trial needs.
Click Therapeutics: This partnership brings together Medidata’s industry expertise with Click Therapeutics’ leading digital therapeutics technology.
Snowflake: Medidata and Snowflake are working together to implement data exchange to provide complete ‘data products’ in real time to customers.
Emerson Clinical Research Institute: Medidata is partnering with Dr. Fabian Sandoval to foster diversity across clinical trials through his Emmy Award-winning TV show, Tu Salud Tu Familia.
“The strategic combination of science and technology available in the Cogstate and Medidata partnership allows us to deliver unique data quality innovations for more informed clinical trial decision-making and better patient outcomes.”
– Brad O’Connor, CEO, Cogstate
Revolutionizing Clinical Research with AI
One of the hottest topics at NEXT was AI—specifically its potential to drive change across the clinical research ecosystem. But how do we use AI to help life sciences professionals work smarter, not harder?
On the study side, AI is being used to de-risk study planning and execution, as well as to transform and streamline study build processes.
For data managers, our new generative AI assistant for audit trail review can save time and improve day-to-day by interrogating and mining audit data.
AI is also revolutionizing patient care by leveraging electronic medical records and unlocking data from different sources like clinical notes and telemedicine protocols.
AI implementation can have effects further downstream for clinical sites. Uses include leveraging AI for protocol design to enhance site operations and workflows, as well as integrating AI to improve cash flow and financial health.
Medidata’s AI Everywhere approach is a fundamental aspect of our new experiences. Above are just a few examples of the promising possibilities that AI’s already bringing to the table.
“[AI’s about] not just driving efficiencies, but opportunity for more time to actively listen to site needs…partnering with them and also learning from patients.”
– Batisha Anson, Global Head, Patient Diversity & Health Equity, Syneos Health
